Re: Thais rank low again at English

I speak Thai better than most of the students I come across can speak English...tbh. The reason is, is because I've had a motivation to do so. Most of these kids have had no such thing interjected into their life in a meaningful way as high school is a ludicrous brainwashing experience where within ...

Re: Dutchman arrested in Hua Hin for alleged child sex abuse

I remember when I used to drink in the city at night time where I live and you'd see the Thai guys picking up their girlfriends from the soapy massage parlour across the street at closing time from the watering hole which was open late. Always wondered how they must feel picking them up with their e...

Re: Farang buying a house with a Thai lady

If you are in a stable marriage, have some spare baht to gamble/invest in your futures, then why not take a chance and buy a house together. I have already accepted that the house we live in belongs to my wife and I simply pay the monthly mortgage, better to pay her than some faceless landlord their...

Re: Some Thais' perception of foreigners

Unfortunately, by the time they get to university it's usually too late and there isn't much you can do to realistically help a fair % of them in an 11 week course (or whatever it is), sink or swim really. By this stage they are either lost or still with a lingering possibility of being slightly sti...

Re: 2017 Poppy Appeal

Modern people understand nothing of poetry and fail miserably to realise the horrors of this whole event. The lessons of the past are fading, which is bad news.

Re: Understanding Thai society and behaviour

Empathy means you understand an emotion/feeling and feel it too. Haha...yeah, which they don't. And also can be applied regarding how if they did have an ounce of empathy they might realise how these emotions might make others feel or how their 'me first' actions affect the emotions of others in th...

Re: Understanding Thai society and behaviour

Not just the selfish "me first" thing, I also often sense a disproportionately large empathy with others deficit on an individual level...to a point where people are not even aware that what they are doing is unacceptable behaviour.

Re: The scourge of Facebook

Well, the locals are some of the biggest believers in Farcebook...so the chief of social brainwashing is coming to meet the dictator. There will be a closet deal on something mutually beneficial despite the denials. What possibly could they have to talk about other than increasing business/access et...

Re: Smoking ban on Hua Hin and Thai beaches, jail time for offenders

This silly law will only be enforced against foreigners/tourists...bet they wouldn't dare pull a Thai in for it for a whole load of reasons. Funny how that angry young Thai guy got away with a wai and 500 baht fine for jumping up and down on a car's roof in the middle of the highway whilst having a ...

Re: Cambodia clamps down on expat visas

Westerners are becoming less welcome in Asia in general and it's getting to the point where you are mostly only given a brief tourist visa in many places now so they can fleece you and then send you on your way. They have China to turn to now for what they need and almost all of these countries (wit...

Re: Thai junta sets firm date for election

Doesn't matter if they hold some sham of an election to attempt to gain a fig leaf of cover, it will result in a weak and spineless coalition government with 250 appointed rubber stamp "Yes" senators and the generals will still be in charge. However, as mentioned by others above, there is little bel...

Re: Smoking ban on Hua Hin and Thai beaches, jail time for offenders

Singling out smokers whiffs of the Thai killjoy brigade, like the holier-than-thou anti-alcohol lobby finger wagers, that get their way often. Why aren't they just enforcing a much stricter littering law policy in general? And it should also be coupled with a high profile educational "Keep Thailand ...
