Re: Thai women second fattest in Asia

TBH I'm wondering if Thai men like their women on the solid side? Nothing wrong with that. The 'ideal' Thai woman (Western style thin straight nose, white skin, slim as a reed) as shown on Thai airline ads and as hunted for by Thai hotels for their front desks has never been my idea of a desirable T...

Re: Thai women second fattest in Asia

I think BB is right that sweets and snacks are the problem, with their unhealthy composition. Thai lifestyle is to eat all day, a little here, a little there. If you're buying veg and grilled food from a street cart then the food should be nutritious; if you're buying packets of snacks from a superm...

Re: Weather in Hua Hin & Thailand

Well, that was some storm last night. I'm just back from the school run - there's a lot of surface water/underwater obstacles out there - be careful. 1) Good for the garden. 2) You run? 3) Yes slowly over standing water, especially on rural roads going out of town. Very scary how during h...

Re: Tax Residency

I would say that even if you pay no tax in Thailand you are resident here for taxation purposes. You maybe still be domiciled in the UK (that's a technicality which changes over time and also depends on many of your personal circumstances), but UK tax residency depends on things like how long you sp...

Re: The Pros & Cons of Using Aircon

It seems that either the germ factory of crowded airports or confined space of an airplane seems to be the best way for me to catch cold. It doesn't help that airplane HVAC delivers low humidity air. Dry upper respiratory passages are far easier to be infected than moist ones. I always fly with and...

Re: Legality of email correspondence

If you want a gloves off lawyer I think you really have to look at Bangkok. I was involved in a group litigation a while back against a failed business (business failed, the money disappeared) and the British lawyer we used was very thorough and I believe prosecuted the case to the fullest extent al...

Re: The Pros & Cons of Using Aircon

Well-directed aircon blows across the room, ceiling fans seem to blow directly on you. I prefer the first. Also same at night. This time of year (winter) I'm happy with fans in the evening (until they dry my eyes to an uncomfortable level) but aircon in the bedroom. In summer, aircon on and off pret...

Re: Thais rank low again at English

The point of English is not to be able to communicate with the expats. That would be the reason to learn Thai, not because it's needed, but a personal goal to be able to communicate with the locals. The reason for learning English goes way beyond that. It's needed in order to better oneself in the ...

Re: Thais rank low again at English

I laugh at the comments 'how many farang can speak Thai, then?' The point is 'how many need to?' Or 'how many would increase their career prospects by speaking Thai?' Or even 'how many are young enough still to absorb another language?' :D English is still (for now) the Lingua Franca of the world. T...

Re: Thais rank low again at English

They are an insular people. Even the young mostly aren't interested in the idea a highflying career or the outside world. English is learnt just to get a job say in a hotel.

Re: Alternative way to upload images to the forum.

Image hosting companies can change their terms of use. Photobucket did a few months ago. Hotlinks don't work anymore unless you upgrade to a Pro account, which is hundreds of dollars a year. Image hosting companies cease operations. Webshots had 32,000,000 users, Kodak Gallery had 20,000,000. That'...
