Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

Perhaps an Aussie could comment on Oz and its convict past. I believe that it is now thought that the importance of its convict influence has been overstated. At the time that the last convict ship arrived in Aus the population was about a million. The total number of convicts imported was 168,000

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

A South African friend of mine says that even at the height of Apartheid one of the problems that SA had was the huge number of people from the recently independent countries to the north, all run by brutal black dictators, who were flooding into SA for a better life. And that if a free vote was tak...

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

I agree that there was a certain belief that we were doing the locals a favor--Kipling, my favourite poet and the great poet of the British Empire wrote "Take up the white man's burden, with all the speed you may" It was the 'duty' of the British to civilize the savages. Was this sincere or just lip...

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

Occupiers or Colonisers--Their motivations are much the same--exploit and plunder. Civilising and helping the local population was done only to serve the colonizers interest. One of the things that the British did much better than other colonizers was to develop a small local middle-class. These loc...

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

It is interesting how little "Frenchness" remains in Indochine, the French empire in SE Asia. In VN very little, more in Hanoi than Saigon. There are a few touches--great bread and coffee, some impressive buildings. The Cathedral and old Post-office in Saigon are a must to visit. Cambodia even less-...

MY advice, if you do go to K, don't be in such a hurry, it is a delightful, historical place and will give you a glimpse of "another" Thailand. Stay at least one night, there are many small inexpensive hotels by the river.

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

When I hear that Thai was never colonized, I look sad, lower my head and say "I'm sorry, i can't think why you weren't colonized"
Malaysia and S'pore are unusual--when they hear a British accent, sooner or later they say with a big smile "we used to be a British colony, you know"

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

Do they still have L plates in the UK. This is such a good idea to alert other motorists to be more courteous to a learner driver. I guess it would have no effect in Thai where there is not much courtesy.

Re: Pros and Cons of Colonization

Walking home in KL with my hosts at 11 at night. We came to a crossing and the light was against us. We could see clearly for several hundred mts in all 4 directions--not a vehicle to be seen but we stood for a couple of mins and waited for the lights to change. This was not fear of being caught by ...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

The posts by US and HHTel are excellent. These 2 ladies see HH through the eyes of visitors, not as ex-pat residents who have, like it or not, come to accept the lethargy of the country as being normal. As time goes by, more and more destinations are working to make themselves more welcoming and att...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

The Chinese are not quite zero-spending tourists. They do pay for accommodation and meals--all bargained down to the lowest possible price. Plus hiring of busses and a little extra shopping. Not nearly as much as Europeans, I admit. They do love the transvestite shows and the 2 showplaces in Patts a...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

Back to the stats. The Malaysian numbers. Shopping is cheaper in THai border towns than in M and many of those entries are M people coming for an hours shopping plus some M men coming for a "night out"
