Re: Why aren't there bars like this in Hua Hin?

I dont think any of us think that we can be integrated into Thai society. I cannot think of one Asian country where that is possible, not even S'pore the most 'western' country. Its not even 'Separate but Equal" that we would like and expect. Its just the ability to be in the same place at the same ...

Re: Ex-communists pocket cash benefits in Thai amnesty deal

Many of the Asian rebel groups called themselves Communists as that way they got arms from Russia and China. They had little in the way of Marxist philosophy in their motivation--they were nationalists who hated the existing governments, Deja vue???

Re: Ex-communists pocket cash benefits in Thai amnesty deal

OK, I see your point. But its nor going to work when the Chinese come calling.

I am reminded of a Peter Sellars movie years ago "The mouse that roared" A small euro country declared war on the US knowing that if they lost the US would rehab them, but of course ----------

Re: The Beer Thread

You seem to imply that all beers have some roasted barley in the mix. I thought that only Stouts (or porters) used roasted barley. Other critical differences are the Temp at which the process is conducted and whether top or bottom fermenting yeasts are used-- these differences cause the division int...

Re: El Toro Loco bar closed?

Many people like to watch sporting events in the company of other sports fans. Even if they can get it at home they like to go to the pubs to watch. In HH the 2 Irish bars Murphs and Father Teds get big crowds for Rugby games. You get used to either no commentary or a difficult to hear one and you g...

Re: El Toro Loco bar closed?

the operators of bars in soi 80- must be happy, but i guess they are smart enough to know that what happened in the centre of town could happen to them too.
As for BB, what about a huge shopping centre full of Indian tailor and optician shops

Re: Crowded Suvarnabhumi nosedives in airport ranking

Suvarnabhumi is just a crowded, sweaty shopping mall where you can catch flights.

I agree, no class, no style just a not-very-friendly second level shopping mall and an immigration staff to welcome you to the "Land of Surly Indifference"

Re: Where did Benja Orchids go?

I don't know but there are 2 ways to fail in business in Thai. 1.If you do not have enough business then you will loose your investment and have to close. 2 If business is good and you are making money--- your family, police, authorities local mafia etc etc will all demand to share the wealth and yo...

Re: How can Thailand curb its appalling road fatality rate?

we are drifting off-topic but into a more interesting area than traffic. These young people are going to have a real up-hill struggle, the older generation will not only not encuorage them but will block any efforts and punish them for suggesting change. One of my favourite lines of poetry is from K...

Re: How can Thailand curb its appalling road fatality rate?

We also believe that individuals and groups of people can effect change, can makea difference and there are examples of this happening. Here there is no such philosophy and few examples of this happening. So there is a total acceptance of the status quo. The governments change, new mayors are instal...
